University of Freiburg’s IT security management certified by TÜV SÜD

DIN EN ISO/IEC27001 certification attests reliable Information Security Management System (ISMS)

Freiburg, Jan 31, 2022

On 28 January 2022 representatives of TÜV SÜD Management Service GmbH officially presented the DIN EN ISO/IEC 27001 certificate for the University of Freiburg’s Information Security Management System (ISMS). The certification process concluded successfully back in November 2021.

TÜV SÜD Management Service GmbH has awarded the University of Freiburg's Information Security Management System (ISMS) the international DIN EN ISO/IEC 27001 certification for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS). It certifies a reliable information security system for the operation of resources in Machine Room II of the data center.

“ISO27001 certification is a striking demonstration that the University IT Services have up-to-date structures and is therefore ideally equipped to provide efficient and secure research data management,” says Prof. Dr. Stefan Rensing, Vice president for Research and Innovation. Holger Köhler, regional manager at TÜV SÜD Management Service GmbH, and lead auditor Kai Weber presented the certificate to the university. The certificate was accepted, among others, by Stefan Rensing, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schneider, Director of the IT Center, Prof. Dr. Rolf Backofen and Dr. Björn Grüning for the de.NBI network alongside Jan Leendertse and Dr. Marc Herbstritt as ISMS representatives.

“Proof that data is handled professionally is increasingly important for funding applications, such as to the German Research Foundation or ministries. University applicants can now document that the data they store at the University IT Services within the framework of their research work are in good hands. University IT Services hopes that this will give our researchers a bit of a competitive edge,” says Gerhard Schneider.

Machine Room II is the location where cloud services that are used by members of the university and its cooperation partners are based. Key partners include the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure Service, Training, Cooperations & Cloud Computing (de.NBI), the Science Data Center Baden-Württemberg and consortiums from the National Research Data Infrastructure Germany (NFDI) such as DataPLANT and BIO4IMAGE. Preparation for certification took two years and was funded with the assistance of de.NBI by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
