2018 marks the 400th anniversary of the beginning of the Thirty Years' War and the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. On this occasion, the Department of History at the University of Freiburg has organized the lecture series “War and Peace in Historical Perspective.” This lecture series is dedicated to central questions of historical research on the causes of armed conflicts over the ages, the influence of wars on societies, on the economy or political culture, as well as the dynamics of violence and paths taken towards peace. The lecture will take place weekly on Mondays starting at 6:15pm in lecture hall 3042, Collegiate Building III, Platz der Universität 3. During the next lecture on October 29, 2018, the Freiburg historian Dr. Peter Kaiser will discuss “The construction of communism as a permanent battle. The Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s.”

Scientists from the Departments of Ancient History, Islamic Studies and History are involved in the lecture series. They will discuss case studies and individual studies from their own research: series topics include the wars and feuds in the High and Late Middle Ages, the American occupation of Germany and Austria between 1944 and 1945, police violence in German Southwest Africa between 1907 and 1915 or the Iran-Iraq War. The lectures will be held in German. Admission is free. Registration is not required.
