Subterranean Twists and Turns
Freiburg, Feb 17, 2020
Drinking water comes from more sources than just rivers and lakes. Water that penetrates the subterranean rock strata of what are known as karst regions creates caverns that are natural storage sites for drinking water. Hydrologist Dr. Andreas Hartmann and his team have visited karst regions on three continents to find out how rain water flows beneath the earth's surface. The team discovered that underground channels of water are much more extensive than is apparent from looking at watersheds on the earth's surface. Thanks to the findings of the researchers from Freiburg, it has become possible to make a type of map of hidden deposits of water.
