Civil resistance as a legitimate form of protest?

Analysis of the actions of the climate movement from a sociological and legal perspective

Freiburg, Mar 10, 2023

Activists of the "Last Generation" alliance block roads, stick themselves to paintings or spray paint the Federal Ministry of Transport. In other words, they rely on civil disobedience to persuade politicians to better protect the climate. But these forms of protest polarise. Lena Herbers classifies the actions of the climate movement from a sociological and legal perspective. She emphasises that social negotiation processes are needed to clarify whether certain forms of protest are legitimate in order to achieve the set goal. Herbers is doing her doctorate at the Institute of Sociology at the University of Freiburg and is researching the perspectives of jurisprudence and activists on civil disobedience from 1975 to today.
