Online tools for the federal election: Debat-O-Meter and VoteSwiper

Teams led by political scientist Uwe Wagschal provide the Debat-O-Meter for the Das Triell program and the VoteSwiper as a voting aid

Freiburg, Sep 09, 2021

The Debat-O-Meter enables people to anonymously assess the TV debate between the candidates for the chancellorship on 12 September live and at the same time contribute to scientific analysis. Users can respond within seconds to the statements and presentation of Annalena Baerbock (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) Armin Laschet (CDU/CSU) and Olaf Scholz (SPD). A scientific analysis of who won the debate is now published here.

The VoteSwiper app is a scientifically-based decision-making tool for the Bundestag elections – now also available in six other languages. By answering 36 questions from almost 20 different areas of policy, users can learn in a fun way which parties best represent their views. The questions come with brief introductory videos. The app is published by the VoteSwiper e.V. association. The anonymized data will also be used by the scientists for further research, such as investigating approval for specific subjects.
