Students gave the University of Freiburg marks of "very good" in many areas. Positive evaluations in organisation of study and introduction to academic work are particularly worth noting.

Freiburg, May 02, 2024

The CHE Centre for Higher Education has published its ranking in May 2024. New evaluations for the subjects assessed in the CHE Ranking are done in a three-year cycle. In this year’s CHE Ranking, the subjects evaluated were biochemistry, biology/bioscience, chemistry, dentistry, geography, geoscience, information technology (IT), mathematics, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physics, political science, sociology, and sports sciences.

The ranking reflects facts from the areas of study, teaching, and research as well as evaluations from students. Students marked the University of Freiburg with the grade of “very good” in many areas. Positive student grading of at least 3.8 stars in the areas of organisation of study, introduction to academic work, IT-infrastructure, available space, and for many subjects, merit special emphasis. The CHE Ranking also illustrates the strong support students receive when they begin their studies at the University of Freiburg. Here, the University of Freiburg placed in the top group in many subject areas.

The University of Freiburg received high ratings in the survey of master’s students

The Centre for Higher Education (CHE) has published its ranking for master’s programmes in computer science, mathematics and physics in december 2024. The ranking evaluates master’s programmes throughout Germany also on the basis of quantitative indicators and a student survey

In the subjects of computer science and physics, the students’ ratings in all the categories surveyed were in the top range, which extends from 3.8 to 5 stars. In addition to the general study environment, the support provided by teachers and the organisation of the course, the students also assessed the range of courses offered and the support provided during their studies. The digital teaching elements, the research and practical orientation, the transition to the master's programme and the support for studying abroad were also evaluated.

In the study, quantitative indicators were used to divide the universities into a top, middle or bottom group for each criterion, with the University of Freiburg achieving top positions: the subject of computer science scored well in terms of third-party funding acquired per scientist and doctorates per professor, while mathematics scored well in terms of publications per scientist.

About the CHE Ranking

The CHE ranking offers comprehensive opportunities to compare universities and universities of applied sciences in a variety of subjects, which are re-evaluated every three years.

While the quantitative indicators for the areas of study, teaching and research were published in the CHE ranking in May 2024, the additional assessments from the survey of Master's students follow in the ranking in December 2024.
