Seven Freiburg researchers are among the most highly cited in the world

Ranking “Highly Cited Researchers 2021” awards 6,600 experts from 70 countries

Seven scientists from the University of Freiburg are among the 6,600 authors who have been cited most frequently worldwide in their fields of research over the past decade. Five of them work at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The “Highly Cited Researchers 2021” ranking is compiled by the company Clarivate Analytics and is an important indicator of the influence of scientists and their publications. It is based on an evaluation of the most frequently cited papers in the "Web of Science" literature database.

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Bauhus and Prof Dr. Carsten Dormann from the Faculty of Environmental and Natural Resources at the University of Freiburg are listed in the ranking. Jürgen Bauhus researches the development dynamics of forests, carbon and nutrient cycles, and the function of tree species and structural diversity, among other things. Carsten Dormann's research focuses on the comparison and development of methods in statistical ecology, for example for the analysis of ecological networks.

From the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Freiburg this year five researchers have been named as “Highly Cited Researchers”: together with his team, Prof. Dr. Jörg Meerpohl develops new ways of making scientific findings available to physicians more quickly, more soundly and more comprehensibly in reviews, among other things. Prof. Dr. Franz-Josef Neumann is an expert in the field of interventional cardiology and first author of a Europe-wide guideline for the treatment of occluded coronary arteries. Prof. Dr. Marco Prinz, and Dr. Ori Staszewski They are investigating the role of the immune system in the healthy brain and its involvement in diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and brain tumors. Among other things, they are investigating the influence of nutrition and epigenetics on the formation of the immune system in the brain. Dr. Lukas Schwingshackl evaluates studies on the impact of nutrition on health using methods of evidence-based medicine and develops new methods for future nutrition guidelines.

About the ranking

The company Clarivate Analytics determines the names of the “Highly Cited Researchers” on the basis of the most cited publications in the literature database “Web of Science.” The ranking includes the authors of research papers that belong to the top one percent in the Web of Science citation index. Papers published and cited in the period from January 2010 to December 2020 were considered in 2021. In total, the ranking lists more than 6,600 researchers from over 70 countries and 21 disciplines.
