As part of the World Knowledge funding initiative, the Volkswagen foundation is giving two University of Freiburg projects about one million euros each. The foundation subsidizes researchers and teachers to help them develop innovative ideas and strategic concepts that contribute to strengthening their subject at their university.
Cross-linking Cultural Knowledge: Cooperative Structures in Cultural Anthropology Research, Teaching and Knowledge Transfer
The goal of this project is to create close, lasting links in the diverse academic landscape of cultural anthropology research at universities and museums. Prof. Dr. Markus Tauschek from the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Freiburg and his colleague Prof. Dr. Thomas Thiemeyer from the University of Tübingen are working to create sustainable cooperative structures with the state museums in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart and other cultural institutions in Baden-Württemberg. “We want our project to strengthen cultural studies research and teaching and thus influence society as well,” says Tauschek. The Volkswagen foundation is supporting the project with a total of 977,600 euros over six years starting 1 July 2021.
The School of Medieval and Neo-Latin Studies: A modular, interdisciplinary, international and digital approach to teaching post-antique Latin
In this project, Prof. Dr. Frank Bezner and Prof. Dr. Stefan Tilg from the Department of Greek and Latin Philology at the University of Freiburg are aiming to strengthen specialization in Medieval and Neo-Latin philology internationally. Together with colleagues from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and the University of Innsbruck, Austria, they are developing modular, interdisciplinary, digital access to post-antique Latin literature with a Master’s degree and a certificate that is also creditable. “We are planning a coordinated system of online and onsite courses that enable flexible participation by students and researchers,” says Tilg. The project starts in January 2022 and will receive a total of 933,600 euros over seven years from the Volkswagen foundation.
