Models and modelling across sciences

The moment complicated matters need to be quantified, simulated or visualized, scientific models come into play. During the 2019/2020 winter semester, the Lunch Lecture Series by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will dedicate itself to this important instrument of modern science. Over the span of eight mid-day sessions, FRIAS Fellows and professors from the University of Freiburg from disciplines such as science theory, physics, immunobiology, ecology, environmental sciences, literature and linguistics will discuss models and modelling.

The series will begin on October 24, 2019 with Dr. Tobias Henschen from the University College at the University of Freiburg. In his lecture, he will examine questions such as What is a scientific model? What functions does a model fulfill? What is the relationship between models and theories?

The lectures take place on Thursdays, last 30 minutes and are followed by a public discussion. They always begin at 12.15 p.m. in Lecture Hall 1009, Collegiate Building I. The series is aimed at all interested parties and is free of charge. No registration is required. The lectures will be held in English.
