European Campus Receives Prix Bartholdi

Minister of Science Theresia Bauer presents the award to the university alliance

Freiburg, Dec 09, 2016

The Prix Bartholdi Association awarded its annual prize to Eucor – The European Campus on 9 December 2016 in the Freiburg University Library, thus recognizing the university alliance for its fundamental contribution to cross-border cooperation. The prize was accepted by representatives from the member universities Basel, Freiburg, Upper Alsace, and Strasbourg, as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The commemorative speech was held by Theresia Bauer, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Science, Research, and the Arts.

“The European Campus is the first-ever common research and innovation area to have its own European legal form. The Upper Rhine universities are thus conducting real pioneering work and setting an example with their  groundbreaking cross-border cooperation. Joint degree programs are already common practice on the Upper Rhine; in the future, the European Campus universities will also appoint joint professors and develop common strategies,” says Minister of Science Theresia Bauer.

“The European Campus is a model project that is unique in Europe. We are building up a trinational research and education area with an international reach. I am delighted to see our commitment to cross-border research recognized with the Prix Bartholdi,” says Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, President of Eucor – The European Campus and Rector of the University of Freiburg.

In addition, the association awarded student prizes worth between 500 and 4000 euros to five economics students from the region who completed an internship abroad: The winners of this year’s student prizes are Kossiwa Apedo from the University of Freiburg’s Center for French Studies, Esmir Davorovic from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, Kristina Knaub from the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, Nathalie Morath from the Kehl University of Applied Sciences, and Camille Risser from the Strasbourg Center for International Management and Marketing.

The Prix Bartholdi is awarded yearly to outstanding projects in the cross-border educational area of the German–French–Swiss border region. It is funded by the booster association “Association Promotion du Prix Bartholdi,” whose members include companies, associations, and private individuals from the region.

Eucor – The European Campus is a trinational university alliance between the Universities of Basel, Freiburg, Upper Alsace, and Strasbourg, as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. It is the first European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (OGTC) to be organized and managed by universities alone. This enables the universities to develop a common strategy for research and teaching and create overarching structures for science in the Upper Rhine region. The goal is to foster cross-border studies, teaching, and research.
