University of Freiburg Appoints New Honorary Professors

The University of Freiburg has appointed two new honorary professors, the president of the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Humanities and Sciences in Germany (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft), Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Barner, and Prof. Dr. Gordon Crawford, of the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations of Coventry University in England.
A mathematician and physician, Andreas Barner has been president of the Donors' Association since 2013. He is also a member of the Presidential Board of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and was a long-time member of the senate of the Leopoldina and in Presidential Board of the German Chemical Industry Association. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1983 and his doctorate in medicine in 1985. He first went to Ciba-Geigy AG, where he worked in pharmaceutical research. In 1992, he went on to work at Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH, where from 2009 to 2016 he was the company management spokesman and responsible for research, development and market entry. At both companies, Barner made significant contributions to the development and market entry of medicines. In 2008, he was given the title of professor and in 2009 received an honorary doctorate. Since 2014, he has held many specialist presentations at the University of Freiburg. Barner is also an active University of Freiburg alumnus and member of the University Council.
At the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Freiburg, he will in future work within the new area of study, "Regulatory Affairs," which is dedicated to the licensing of pharmaceuticals, and continue his activities in biological and medical ethics. Barner was appointed to the University Council in October 2015.
A political scientist, Gordon Crawford, is known as one of the internationally leading researchers in the study of developing countries. He has, among other things, also long been a co-publisher of the specialist journal Democratization. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1998 from the University of Leeds in England, he first became a lecturer and then went on in 2008 to become a professor of development politics. Since 2015, Crawford has been a professor of global development at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University in England. His most-cited publications investigate the relationship between development policy and political reform, questions of human rights and issues of social justice. Geographically, his work is focused on sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia. More precisely, in Africa, he has concentrated mainly on Ghana, while in Asia, Indonesia and Nepal are his areas of emphasis.
At the University of Freiburg, Crawford's research will above all be carried out in cooperation with the Department of Political Science and at the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute for Socio-Cultural Research (ABI). He will also hold lectures on development policy.
