With Neither Blueprint nor Architect

According to which rules do nerve cells in the brain form networks, and why? A neuroscientist at the University of Freiburg, Samora Okujeni, is working on an answer to this question. When nerve cells form networks, they interact with each other. This takes place not only in tissue with in the brain, but also in a Petri dish. Complex structures develop during the process, although there is no strictly established blueprint or architect directing the design. Scientist call this process "neural self-organization." Okujeni is using neural cell cultures to explore the interrelationship between structural formation and neural electrical activity. His latest publication has appeared in the science journal, Journal of Neuroscience.
