The academic year begins on October 20, 2021

Rector Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein will kick off the Academic Year on October 20, 2021. The event will be livestreamed. As part of the celebrations, this year's winners of the Bertha Ottenstein Award, the University Teaching Award, the Young Talent Awards, the Special Award for Student Involvement, and the Alumni Award for Social Involvement will be announced and honored.
The kick-off for the Academic Year will take place for the first time in a hybrid format: To ensure that, in addition to the 120 invited guests, all interested parties have the opportunity to follow the festivities, the event will be broadcast live via Zoom from 10 am to 11:30 am.
Roundtable discussion about University policies
Rector Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein will kick off the Academic Year. After her speech, members of the University administration, the University Council and student representatives will exchange views on diversity in society and science communication in a round table discussion.
Keynote speech by Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng
In a keynote speech, Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng will talk about "Why the World Needs Diversity". She is Professor of Mathematics Education and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town/South Africa since 2018.

Honors for award winners
Film clips will present various University members who make daily contributions toward improving science. In addition, this year’s winners of the Bertha Ottenstein Award, the University Teaching Award, the Young Scientists Award, the Special Award for Student Involvement and the Alumni Award for Social Involvement will be announced, shown on film and honored.
