Science Days 2021 at the University of Freiburg

This year's Science Days will take place at Europa-Park Rust from October 21 to 23, 2021. Children and young people can discover science and research here. The University of Freiburg is represented with five exciting programs.

Freiburg Materials Research Center:
All ablaze for combustion, Booth E1

How does the air we breathe become a warming fire? What is the connection between a simple campfire and an internal combustion engine? Why does research into combustion continue? What are synthetic fuels? These and other questions about combustion can be explored on site with scientists from the Materials Research Center.

Cluster of Excellence livMatS:
Bending, Breaking, Changing colors, Booth D4

The materials around us are not always as predictable as one might think at first glance. Together with livMatS researchers, you can investigate breaking spaghetti, wet pinecones and inconspicuous pieces of plastic. Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in a current research project.

CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies
Make the genome visible and learn “cell speak”, Booth D1

All cells in the human body have one thing in common: they have a cell nucleus with DNA as the transmitter of hereditary information. DNA stores how cells are structured and how they assemble into complex tissues. CIBSS scientists will demonstrate how DNA can be easily isolated from fruit and made visible. There is also an exciting online program with videos on the immune system and the language of cells. In the coloring contest #CIBSSistbunt you can also win a book about biological signals! Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences:
From the center of the Earth to Mars Vom Erdkern bis zum Mars, Booth D2

Earth and other celestial bodies and the variety of processes that take place in and on them are the subject of earth sciences. We often encounter the building blocks of these processes, as well as the processes themselves, in our everyday lives, and sometimes they may even hold clues about distant planets. With hands-on exhibits and hands-on experiments, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of earth science with researchers from the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences. How does a volcano work and what does it tell me about the Earth’s core? Which stones do you actually need to build a smartphone? How do you extract metal from a stone? What exactly does the Mars rover do and what do we do with the information? What happens during a meteorite impact and what does it look like? Visitors can explore the answers to these questions through models, in experiments, under the microscope and on mineral and rock samples. In addition, visitors can bring along their own geological finds, which can then be determined together on site.

Astounding Physics Experiments, Booth D5

With hands-on experiments, you can expand your view of physics with scientists from the Institute of Physics. Visitors will discover surprising physical phenomena and their application in modern technology.
