The Freiburg musicologist Konrad Küster reconstructs how a Luther mass was held in the 16th century
Freiburg, Jun 13, 2017
In 2017 the Reformation turns 500 years old. An independent evangelic sermon form emerged from it in the German church that doesn’t break from the existing traditions, but rather holds fast to them. Hymns such as the Gregorian chant remain a central element in the Luther mass liturgy. Today’s sermon does not reflect how a Luther mass took place back then. For this reason Prof. Dr. Konrad Küster from the musicology seminar at the University of Freiburg reconstructed a mass from 1546 based on contemporary recordings and had it performed in Bremen’s cathedral. Küster describes how a Luther mass looked like in a video.
