Opening of the Academic Year

Rector Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein will open the 2022/2023 academic year with the traditional ceremony on 19 October. Like last year, the event will be held in a hybrid format. It will be broadcast live on the web service Vimeo from 9:30 a.m. to around 12:30 p.m., allowing the interested public to follow the ceremony along with the 120 invited guests.
Panel discussion on “Paths to Sustainability”
After the greeting and address by Rector Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein, there will be a panel discussion between Alma Spribille (WEtell GmbH), Lena Rohwedder (Student of Sustainability Certificate of the University of Freiburg), and Dr. Javier Francisco (FRIAS – Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies) on paths to sustainability. The discussion will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Daniela Kleinschmit, University of Freiburg’s vice president for internationalization and sustainability. Viewers can ask questions in a live chat.
Guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Dipesh Chakrabarty
The guest lecture will be held by Prof. Dr. Dipesh Chakrabarty. He is professor of history and South Asian studies at the University of Chicago, USA, and author of the book The Climate of History in a Planetary Age.
Awarding of Prizes
Moreover, the winners of this year’s Bertha Ottenstein Prize, the University Teaching Award, the Awards for the Promotion of Young Academics, the Special Prize for Student Involvement, and the Alumni Prize for Social Involvement will be announced, presented in films, and awarded. All of the university’s eleven faculties will be presented in film clips.
