The Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the Shanghai Ranking, just published its ranking list for 2021. The University of Freiburg ranked fifth to sixth among German universities and has therefore consistently maintained its top position over the past few years. At the state level, Freiburg is the highest-rated university in Baden-Württemberg after Heidelberg. Of the 1,000 universities reviewed worldwide, Freiburg is ranked between 101 and 150. The ranking does not allow for a more precise breakdown.

Six indicators determine the ranking

The Chinese organization ShanghaiRanking Consultancy uses six indicators in its international Academic Ranking of World Universities. Among other things, the ranking takes into account the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals won by members of the universities, the number of highly cited researchers, and the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science.

In addition, according to the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, the University of Freiburg is among the top 75 worldwide in the subject groups of environmental sciences, human biology and agricultural sciences. This ranking has already been published in May 2021 and is also collected by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
