The forest and foresters through the ages
Freiburg, Jul 04, 2017
Numerous myths and stories revolve around the forester ever since the profession emerged in the 18th century. A current poster exhibit pursues the historic, traditional and current images of the forest ranger. Students from the project seminar “Forester images – a self-examination and the perception of others about the profession’ at the Institute of Forest Sciences at the University of Freiburg developed the exhibit. It illuminates societal discourse, power constellations and economic and political conditions that influenced the historic transformation of how foresters perceive themselves and how others view them too.
At the same time, another poster exhibit from the project seminar “Monuments in the forest. Recognizing and protecting historic forest monuments – field research on historic forestry trade in the Black Forest” is focusing on the relationship between man and forest. Over the last thousand years, various forestry trades have developed into a major economic power. Archaeological and small monuments on site reveal how and to what degree these trades influenced the forest areas. The project seminar analyzed the monuments in Münstertal and the southern part of the Black Forest. The exhibit will present the results regarding the history of the forest’s usage and development.
