Researching German Schlager music

Schlager is considered a long-lived genre that is difficult to distinguish from other directions of popular music. While Schlager music, especially in Germany, had a bourgeois aftertaste until at least the early 2000s, it now appears modern and is highly successful. "Nevertheless, the popular phenomenon is clearly underrepresented in current cultural and musicological research," notes cultural scientist Dr. Johannes Müske from the Centre for Popular Culture and Music (ZPKM) at the University of Freiburg. A workshop at the ZPKM, on the other hand, would like to examine Schlager without prejudice, but not uncritically, and provide an impetus for a broader and systematic exploration of the topic. The workshop aims to address questions regarding the ideological-political dimension of Schlager, the gender staging of individual stars, Schlager film and the economic and musical dimensions of Schlager.
