Freiburg’s beginnings

For a long time Freiburg was regarded as a city that had been founded by the noble family of the Zähringer on greenfield sites as planned. In urban history research, it is still exemplary for the founding cities of the high Middle Ages. Archaeological and historical research has called this image into question in recent decades. The conference “New Frameworks - The Beginnings of Freiburg in the European Context. Archaeological and Historical Perspectives” summarizes this research on the occasion of the city’s 900th anniversary. In addition, it aims to place Freiburg’s beginnings in a European comparative framework for the first time. The speakers will discuss Freiburg’s findings with regard to other city developments and city foundations in the High Middle Ages, applied technology and infrastructure as well as the image of the city around 1200. The conference is supported by the Irene Kyncl Foundation.
