Europe and Africa at a turning point
Freiburg, May 28, 2019
Almost 40 years ago, the North-South Commission, chaired by former Chancellor Willy Brandt, presented the so-called Brandt Report, which even back then had called for a better integration of the countries of the South into the world economy and urged the industrial nations to promote developing countries more sensibly. The report is still highly topical today, particularly because North-South relations are at a turning point: There are new global political players, new global challenges, but also new solutions. In terms of development policy, the “Sustainable Development Goals” have moved to the forefront and form a new basis for a common value-oriented policy. Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul's lecture on “Europe and Africa: A peace project based on shared interests and values” marks the start of the new series “Freiburg Africa Talks.” Wieczorek-Zeul was Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development from 1998 to 2009.
