CANCELED! Cultural heritage as a key to integration
Freiburg, Jul 03, 2018
Students from migrant and non-migrant backgrounds are focusing on historical issues about their (new) hometown: The Kastelberg Gemeinschaftsschule in Waldkirch participated in an EU-funded project “Heritage Interpretation for Migrant Inclusion at Schools“ (HIMIS). Its goal is to strengthen basic European values such as respect for human dignity, pluralism, freedom and solidarity. It aims to help people with a migrant background integrate into their schools and their local environment. At the same time, it addresses students from long-established families, whose openness depends on whether integration succeeds. By getting to know all their surroundings better, they should develop a stronger sense of belonging to their community. In addition, the cultural and historical heritage offers opportunities to experience the historical roots of European values. The project, which was supported by the Institute for Environmental Social Sciences and Geography at the University of Freiburg, will be presenting its results at a final conference in Freiburg.
