The University of Freiburg has a lot planned in the coming years. Work on the next strategy and development plan for 2019-2023 has begun and the closely tied preparation for the competitions „excellence strategy“ and „junior development program“ are well underway. What are the relevant issues and what positions do university and college policies take? What is the University of Freiburg working on specifically? Together with the rectorate the colloquium politicum will address these questions and many more in the lecture and discussion series „On Research, Instruction and Career Paths – The University of Freiburg’s Future“ with speakers from academia, politics and society. The series will be kicked off with a

discussion evening „Competing for excellence – what does that mean?“
on Friday, April 28, 2017 from 6-8:30pm.
The location is „Zur Lieben Hand“, Löwenstraße 16, 79098 Freiburg,

to address the excellence competition and its advantages and disadvantages. After a brief introduction about the idea and history behind the excellence initiative, both internal and external speakers will participate in three rounds of statements about the various aspects of the competition.

Between each round there will be time for a panel discussion and during incremental breaks participants will form smaller discussion groups. The goal is to give ample opportunity to offer open comments and criticism regarding the excellence initiative and strategy. The following members will be present to report on and discuss the issues: Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, rector at the University of Freiburg, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bröckling, Institute for Sociology at the University of Freiburg, Dr. Hans-Gerhard Husung, former secretary general for the Joint Science Conference, Dr. Beate Konze-Thomas, former head of the Program and Infrastructure Funding for the German Research Foundation, Prof. Dr. Elke Lütjen-Drecoll, deputy chairwoman for the Imboden Commission, Prof. Dr. Tilmann Reitz, Institute for Sociology at the University of Jena, and Mandy Gratz, „free coalition of student bodies“.

Two or three events per semester are planned during the series – with issues of national concern such as academic career development, the meaning of profile development or new educational concepts, but also location-specific topics such as the European Campus or intercollegial cooperation that the University has with other educational and research institutions on site. Students, professors and University employees as well as the general public are invited to attend. The event is free and no registration is required.

The second event has already been organized as well: Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Barner will give a talk on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 8:15pm in Kollegiengebäude I, Lecture Hall 1199, 79098 Freiburg. The title is „An Alumnus in the University Council and the Donors’ Association: Three Perspectives on the University of Freiburg“.
