Calls, e-mails and contact via social media – constant availability subjects employees to severe stress. But what is the best way to respond? Freiburg business psychologist Dr. Nina Pauls and her colleague Dr. Christian Schlett have worked with companies to test out better approaches to dealing with constant availability.

Find it, find it!
Dogs can sniff out explosive materials with the greatest precision – and at the same time protect people's privacy. However, unlike the use of technical tools such as the controversial body scanner, there are no set standards for the use of sniffer dogs. Cultural anthropologist Martina Biebert hopes that her research will contribute to standardization, for example, of the training of dog handlers.

The right routes
The Silk Route is a network of trade routes that linked Europe with Asia since ancient times and enabled a lively trade in many goods. Now, the Chinese government has announced that it wants to establish a new Silk Route: Rome doesn't feature on the map, but Düsseldorf does. Ancient historian Prof. Dr. Sitta von Reden believes China's current initiative is a bogus claim – and an attempt to secure its power in Central Asia.

Elderberry, bay, sage: Dr. Henriette Gruber explains the benefits of leaves and blossom for physical well-being. Dressed as a wise woman or witch, the biologist gives a guided tour of the Botanic Garden on the subject 'Witches, spirits and genetics – medicinal herbs and science'. On 23 September 2017 the head gardener Dirk Rohleder will guide visitors on an autumn walk around the gardens.

The strength of the minority
Inhibiting nerve cells make up only a fraction of the human brain – but their function is far more important than previously thought. Prof. Dr. Marlene Bartos' research group has found that inhibiting nerve cells have an important mechanism which is the basis for learning processes.
