THE World University Rankings 2024: University of Freiburg takes 11th place in German universities
Freiburg, Oct 04, 2023
The Times Higher Education (THE) magazine’s World University Rankings 2024 places the University of Freiburg eleventh among German universities. Internationally, the University of Freiburg takes 128th place.
The University of Freiburg stands out in the category of industry above all, where it achieves the maximum score of 100 points. This is assessed on the basis of industry income and patents performance indicators. Industry income rates performance in knowledge transfer, specifically through innovations, inventions and consultancy. The patents metric evaluates performance in technology transfer and measures the number of patents citing research published by an institution.
In total, the rankings this year list more than 1,900 universities from 108 countries and regions worldwide, including 49 universities from Germany.
Updated methodology of THE World University Rankings
THE has updated its methodology for assessing universities in the World University Rankings. It now covers 18 performance indicators – up from the previous 13 – in the areas teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry, each with a different weighting. Besides drawing on a worldwide survey of scientists on universities’ reputation in research and teaching, it includes statistical metrics such as the frequency of citations by publications and the proportion of international students and researchers in its analysis.
