How citizens can help to shape research

This year’s Citizen Science Forum will take place in Freiburg on November 29 and 30, 2023. The symposium offers a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing and networking to anyone engaged in the field of citizen science. The theme of this year’s event is “Mit Vielfalt Wissen schaffen” [Creating Science With Diversity]. Anyone who is interested can register to attend. Wissenschaft im Dialog, in cooperation with the Museum of Natural History Berlin and the support of the University of Freiburg, is the organiser of the Citizen Science Forum 2023.

Citizen science projects actively involve members of the public in the research process. This involvement varies from project to project, and can take many forms. This diversity is reflected in the event’s programme. For instance, researchers will be reporting on research into plastic waste with school pupils and teachers, as well as on studies of drinking water from their own taps, and on how AI and citizen science can improve protection from insects. Besides the data and results from research involving members of the public, there are lectures and interactive formats presenting various methods and potential real-life challenges. A poster session with presentations of various citizen science projects will provide an opportunity for discussion.

During the forum, Germany’s central citizen science platform Bürger schaffen Wissen [citizens create knowledge] will also present the new “Wissen der Vielen – research prize for citizen science” for the first time. This prize is awarded by a jury of professors from a range of disciplines in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements involving the use of citizen science.
