Studium generale starts on October 17, 2022 in full attendance at the University of Freiburg

The Studium generale at the University of Freiburg is introducing its new program for the winter semester 2022/2023, which begins on October 17. “We are pleased that our diverse program can again take place in full attendance and hope that the public will actively engage in this program. We will comply with all the hygiene regulations that are required, of course,” says Prof. Dr. Werner Frick, the head of Studium generale.

Saturday University will also take place in full attendance

After a break due to the pandemic, the “Saturday University,” which is organized in cooperation with the Volkshochschule Freiburg and the University's Centre for Security and Society, will take place again this semester in lecture hall 1010 and on some dates in the auditorium at the University of Freiburg. Under the title “Resilience: Fortitude in Times of Crisis” on twelve Saturdays, experts from various disciplines will discuss which capacities for resilience and cognitive and psychological resources society and its individuals have at their disposal in order to react appropriately and successfully to global threats, crises and catastrophes. On the one hand, the significance and use of the concept of resilience in various scientific fields will be explained and, on the other hand, current areas of application will be discussed from the perspective of a broad spectrum of humanities, cultural, social, natural and technical sciences: How can the forest, the soul, the energy networks, the economic and financial system or the international order become more resilient? 

Exchange between science and society

The seven-part lecture series offered jointly with University College Freiburg, “A Dialogue between the Sciences and their Audiences” is devoted to forms of exchange between science and society, for example science communication and scientific consultation with the Bundestag.

The series “Books People Talk About” will continue this winter with two talks. The focus is on the volume of essays Europe, Democracy, Constitutional Courts by former President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany Prof. Dr. Andreas Voßkuhle along with a book containing the correspondence between Rainer Maria Rilke and the costume designer, book illustrator and lyricist Agnes Therese Brumof, for which Prof. Dr. Achim Aurnhammer and Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer are the editors. This semester’s discussions of current productions include two opera classics, Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth and Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, as well as the contemporary opera Marnie by American composer and pianist Nico Muhly.

The lecture series “Contours of Future Society” in cooperation with the Catholic Academy deals with the "Future of Money" and the "Sociology of Disconnection" in the winter semester. The six-part series "The Department Researches: Art History(s)" takes a look at research from the Department of Art History.

Colloquium politicum discusses the World Cup in Qatar and the strengths and weaknesses of democracy
