Honorary senatorship and university medals awarded for 2024

At the Dies Universitatis 2024 on 4 June 2024, Rector Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein awarded Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Leena Bruckner-Tuderman with the title of Honorary Senator for her many years of support for the University of Freiburg. In her laudatory speech, Krieglstein emphasised: “Professor Bruckner-Tuderman is an outstanding academic who has continuously supported the strategic development of the University of Freiburg.”
Bruckner-Tuderman has been a professor at the University of Freiburg since 2002 and Medical Director at the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg since 2003. At the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, she was Director of the FRIAS-LifeNet of the School of Life Sciences. She was also Vice Dean for Strategy and Development at the Faculty of Medicine and a member of the University of Freiburg's University Council from February 2017 to September 2020. She has received great recognition as a scientist. She has been a member of the Leopoldina since 2007, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2010 and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2012. As Vice President of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2012 to 2019, she promoted the further development of the science system as a whole.

University medals for Daniela Kleinschmit and Jörn Leonhard
Two outstanding personalities have received the University Medal for their special contributions to the University of Freiburg:
- Prof. Dr. Daniela Kleinschmit, Professor of Forest and Environmental Policy, was part-time Vice Rector for Internationalisation and Sustainability from April 2021 to March 2024. The University gratefully recognises her achievements, in particular the acquisition of the Sustainability Innovation Campus.
- Prof. Dr. Jörn Leonhard, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History of Western Europe. The University highlights his award of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize 2024 and his excellent research. Leonhard researches the history of Europe in the 20th century and its impact on the present day.
