Main entrances to the University library Freiburg have been closed off for safety purposes
Freiburg, Aug 07, 2018
The University library Freiburg (UB) is temporarily accessible through the Milchstrasse bicycle garage only: a small retaining plate on the supporting structure (about 4 x16 centimeters in size) has come off and fallen to the ground – most likely due to the heat. University management in conjunction with the Freiburg Office of the Baden-Wuerttemberg Property and Construction Department and the police have decided to temporarily close the building’s main entrance for security reasons. “This is a precautionary measure designed to protect visitors,” emphasizes University Rector Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer.
Over the next few days, the Freiburg Office of the Baden Wuerttemberg Property and Construction Department will be closing off the façade all around with building fences and erecting covered entrances to the main entrances to ensure safe access to the building as quickly as possible. It also examines what works on the facade are required. “We will take responsibility to get to the root cause of the matter,” emphasizes the head of the Freiburg office, Karl-Heinz Bühler.
Bicycles parked along the facade have been relocated to the nearby environment by the University Security Service. The outdoor operation of the cafeteria is temporarily suspended.
“We greatly regret our limited operation and the fact that barrier-free access must also be temporarily interrupted. The safety of our visitors comes first,” emphasizes Dr. Antje Kellersohn, the library director.
