Karl Marx – a “dead dog”?
Freiburg, Apr 18, 2018
Two centuries after his birth, the ideas of Karl Marx seem pretty lively. Labeled a “dead dog” a few years ago, he’s been brought back into the debate in the wake of the financial crisis - nowhere more than at universities. Working with the Colloquium politicum, the University of Freiburg’s Institute of Sociology and the Philosophisches Seminar have taken the upcoming anniversary as an opportunity to reexamine Marx and his current relevance in this eleventh lecture series with speakers from various disciplines. What remains of Marx? Does he hold any answers to the pressing questions facing us now - for instance, what is the future of capitalism and work? How do humans relate to the world and to themselves? And what about growing global inequality?
The first lecture on 25 April 2018 at 8.15 pm in the Kollegiengebäude (KG) I, hall 1010, Platz der Universität 3, 79098 Freiburg involves a podium discussion with experts in Karl Marx research and reception: sociologist Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Eßbach, University of Freiburg, historian Dr. Michael Berger, University of Freiburg, Prof. Dr. Andrea Maihofer, Professor of Gender Studies and head of the Gender Studies Center at the University of Basel, and economist Dr. Michael Heinrich, Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Christian Dries of the University of Freiburg Institute of Sociology.
Most of the rest of the lectures in the series will take place on Wednesdays from 8pm in the KG I, Horst-Weitzmann-Hörsaal 1098. Three of the lectures are on Mondays ab 20.15 from 8.15 pm in the KG I, lecture hall 1199.
The events are open to all; they are conducted in German. There is no need to register; admission is free.
