Humanities students are building robots – how does it affect their attitude toward technological progress?

Freiburg, Jan 03, 2019

Engineering and humanities students don’t mix – at least that’s what some people think. At University College Freiburg, a part of the University of Freiburg, Dr. Reto Schölly is creating robots with students who have no previous engineering experience. Whether it involves alternative walking aids for the blind or machines that run errands for people in large buildings, the students design and build the robots themselves and with the simplest materials. At the same time they discuss different philosophical viewpoints on technology and criticism of its progress. The practical work is intended to help them rethink their view of robots. After the course, the participants agree that there is no magic behind algorithms and circuits that could threaten humanity.
