Camera On or Off?
Freiburg, Feb 12, 2021
The year began with a reform of the State Higher Education Act: As of 1 January 2021, the State of Baden-Württemberg provides a legal basis for online examinations. It regulates the legal framework for written exams, which were held up to now under the supervision of a proctor at the university and can now also be held in an online format at home. The main focus is on data protection: The University of Freiburg does not use proctoring software for automated monitoring. Participation in video-proctored online exams is voluntary for students. Students may opt out of such exams if, for instance, the university offers an on-campus exam at the same time as an alternative or if it agrees to hold an on-campus exam before the exam phase of the following semester at the latest. Dr. Nicole Wöhrle, director of the E-Learning Service Center at the IT Services Department, explains what kinds of digital exams will be used at the University of Freiburg. In addition, a toolbox put together by the E-Learning Service Center provides tips and tricks for teachers offering online exams.
