University of Freiburg students will determine who their representatives in the senate, faculty councils and great faculty councils will be during the University election on June 19, 2018. Elections for the student government body will take place at the same time. Candidates have already been identified. But what if the students could make a wish? Kerstin Ernst asked them: “Which historic person would you elect as your student representative?” A video explains how the 2018 University elections work.

“I would elect Helmut Schmidt as our student representative. He had a solid general understanding of various contexts, something you could really use within University politics. Schmidt could also support additional lectures in which researchers from other universities and business experts would present their ideas.”

“I would most likely elect Winston Churchill: He was a political genius and an overall impressive person. I particularly like his politics, which became increasingly more liberal toward the end of his career. That is why he would make a great candidate for student representative as he could bring his liberal democratic values to the table.”

“I would nominate Sophie Scholl. I recently saw a film about the resistance “White Rose”, which I found to be very interesting. And even though the times were different back then, the students could learn a lot from her. I find it impressive that she stood by her opinion and fought against National Socialism to the very end. And even though she knew she would be executed for it.”

“My favorite would be Otto von Bismarck. I loved how unbelievably pragmatic he was as a politician. He always responded to the particulars of a situation with the people’s best interest in mind. In order to do that, he often had to give up his own position and be adaptable. I find that to be particularly impressive.”
