Online panel discussion on “Diversity and Openness as a Mission at Universities in Europe”

Executives of the European university association Eucor discuss the role of universities’ in creating open and diverse societies

Freiburg, Feb 04, 2022

On 15 February there will be a panel discussion on “Diversity and Openness as a Mission at Universities in Europe” at which executive members of the five universities that make up Eucor – The European Campus will discuss the social role and responsibility of the trinational university association in the light of increasing hate, discrimination and marginalization of certain public discourses. The German science journalist Jan-Martin Wiarda will moderate, as university representatives from Germany, France and Switzerland speak on how universities can rise to this challenge through increasing cross-border cooperation and intercultural exchange.

The panel debate is part of the “For a University of Diversity and Against Hate” series of events. Building on the book “Against Hate” by Carolin Emcke, the University of Freiburg has been working on the issue of hate, discrimination and marginalization in various formats for two semesters now, and won a prize for this project in 2021 in the “Eine Uni – ein Buch” competition held by the donors’ association and the Klaus Tschira foundation.

The European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGCT) Eucor – The European Campus developed out of a long-standing cooperation between the universities of the Upper Rhine region. The Universities of Freiburg, Basel, Strasbourg, Haute-Alsace and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) created the very first EGCT between higher education institutes at a European level in 2015. Together, the university association is working to build a scientific space with a clearly defined profile, without walls or borders and with international outreach.

The panel will include:
