New Course Offerings in the 2021/22 Winter Semester

Two new degree programs - new additional subjects for teacher education programs - adjustments in Environmental Natural Sciences and Psychology

Freiburg, Oct 11, 2021

At the start of the 2021/22 winter semester, the University of Freiburg will introduce new degree programs in Midwifery and Catholic Theology. In addition, Environmental Natural Sciences and Forest Sciences will replace previous degree programs, additional third subjects will be offered for teacher education programs, and the degree program in Psychology will be made compliant with licensure regulations.

Additional Subjects for Teacher Education

Starting in October, teacher education students can select an additional third subject as a so-called additional subject. In the “Master of
Education – Additional Subject” program for secondary school teacher education, interested students may earn 90 or 120 ECTS credits in a third subject. After completing their teacher training, graduates with 90 credits in an additional subject are qualified to teach it at the lower and middle grade levels, and those with 120 credits may additionally teach the subject at the upper grade levels. There are a total of 14 subjects to choose from: German, English, French, History, Greek, Computer Science, Italian, Catholic Theology, Latin, Mathematics, Political Science, Russian, Spanish, and Economics. For subjects that are taught primarily in the upper grades, such as political science, students must earn 120 ECTS credits.

Catholic Theology

The University of Freiburg and the University of Strasbourg are launching a binational licentiate degree program in Catholic Theology within the context of EUCOR – The European Campus. Completion of the research-oriented course of study provides qualifications to teach at a seminary or an equivalent training institution and also serves a preparation for doctoral studies. The languages of instruction are German, French, and English. The prerequisites for admission to the postgraduate degree program include a completed university degree in theology.

Environmental Natural Sciences and Forest Sciences

The two bachelor of science degree programs in Environmental Natural Sciences and Forest Sciences will start in the winter semester. In return, the bachelor major field degree components Environmental Natural Sciences and Forestry and Environment will be eliminated, as will the five minor field degree components Wood and Bioenergy, International Forest Management, Meteorology and Climatology, Nature Conservation, and Landscape Preservation.

In the Environmental Natural Sciences degree program, students approach the environment from the perspective of various disciplines. In addition to the natural scientific foundations of biology, chemistry, physics, and ecology, the program also examines the complex interactions within ecosystems and their relationship to human activity. Field trips, field exercises, and laboratory courses provide practical experience. In the first semester of the program, students choose one of five specializations as an integrated minor field: Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources, Land Use in an International Context, Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation, Meteorology and Climatology, or Environmental Social Sciences. Graduates find work in professions related to the energy transformation, nature and environmental conservation, as well as in planning offices and industry.

The Forest Sciences degree program focuses on forest–human interactions and integrates natural science, engineering, and social science disciplines. Students examine the conservation and the sustainable use of forests and woodlands. The diverse landscape located right at Freiburg’s doorstep offers ideal conditions for field courses and field trips. In the course of the first semester of the program, students have the opportunity to pursue their own areas of interest in more depth by choosing an integrated minor field. Five specializations are available as integrated minor fields: Forestry Management, Land Use in an International Context, Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation, Meteorology and Climatology, and Environmental Natural Sciences. Graduates of the program are qualified for work in “classical” forestry professions as well as in professions in the areas of nature conservation, renewable energies, forest and environmental education, development cooperation, or in the timber industry.

Midwifery

The new bachelor of science in Midwifery provides students with a tightly integrated university and practical occupational training program. In a seven-semester standard period of study, the program covers the theoretical foundations of midwifery, practical aspects of the profession, and related disciplines. The practical component of the program takes place in various hospitals and medical practices as well as with self-employed midwives or in midwife-led outpatient institutions.

In addition, a so-called skills lab helps students strengthen special practical skills. Here they can simulate specific communication scenarios, examination methods, or obstetrical emergency situations. The tight integration of the theoretical and practical components of the program provides students an optimal foundation for future work as a midwife in all relevant fields of activity.

Psychology

As of the 2021/22 winter semester, the degree program in Psychology (B.Sc.) will be compliant with regulations for licensure. This gives students who complete the three-year bachelor’s program in Psychology the option to pursue a two-year master’s program in Psychology with a concentration in Clinical Psychology, which is also compliant with licensure regulations. The course of study leads to a Master of Science in Psychology and simultaneously offers the possibility of taking a state examination to be granted a license as a psychotherapist. A postgraduate continuing education program is then required to obtain specialist qualifications. The program was restructured on the basis of the German psychotherapy law and the regulations for licensure as a psychotherapist.
