Human and Artificial Intelligence at Lunch Break

Most people eat, stroll, or go shopping on their lunch break. The Lunch Lectures of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) offer a completely different way to pass the time at midday. Starting from 25 April 2019, FRIAS will offer a lecture series that is dedicated to exploring what human and artificial intelligence (AI) have in common, and how they differ and interact. Researchers from a range of disciplines, such as philosophy, psychology, or information technology are giving the talks.

The series will open with a lecture by junior professor Dr. Joschka Boedeker of the University of Freiburg's Department of Computer Science. He will present an overview of the history of and trends related to AI. The lectures are held every Thursday. They last about half-an-hour and end with an opportunity for public discussion of the topic. The activities begin at 12:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall 1009 of Collegiate Building I. The lecture series is open to anyone who is interested. Attendance is free of charge. Registration is not required. The lectures will be delivered in English.

The interdisciplinary FRIAS Group "Responsible Artificial Intelligence" is organizing the Lunch Lectures. The group is being supported within the University of Freiburg’s new "Saltus!" format. The researchers are investigating the conceptual and philosophical foundations of the interaction between human and artificial intelligence and the ethical, legal, and societal challenges that come as a result.
