Trinational Research and Teaching Program

Freiburg Professor to Participate in Upper Rhine Network for Synthetic Biology

Freiburg, Mar 14, 2012

Trinational Research and Teaching Program

Prof. Dr. Wilfried Weber

Interactive biohybrid materials, therapeutic gene networks, and stem cell research: Scientists from universities in Germany, France, and Switzerland have united to form the Upper Rhine Network for Synthetic Biology. Prof. Dr. Wilfried Weber from the Cluster of Excellence BIOSS (Centre for Biological Signalling Studies) and the Institute of Biology II of the University of Freiburg is participating in the network, which is receiving funding from the European Union program “INTERREG IV.” He and his colleagues aim to pool their expertise in the area of synthetic biology to study the mechanisms of molecular illnesses as a basis for developing new biomedical therapy solutions.
In addition to Weber, an expert on the development of interactive materials for the reprogramming of animal and human cells, the participating researchers include Prof. Dr. Martin Fussenegger from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, Prof. Dr. Uwe Strähle from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Dr. Jean-Luc Galzi from the research center ESBS, a trinational engineering school for biotechnology at the University of Strasbourg, France.
The research program will be accompanied by the introduction of a new master’s program in Synthetic Biology, to be launched in September 2012. The courses will be held alternately at the universities of Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Basel, and Strasbourg.
