“Shanghai Ranking” - University of Freiburg garners fifth place in Germany

Freiburg continues to rank among the best 101-150 universities in the world. In four subject-specific rankings, the University of Freiburg is among the top 75 worldwide.

In the current Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, the University of Freiburg ranks fifth in a Germany-wide comparison; last year it was fifth to sixth. Worldwide, the ranking places it among the 101-150 best universities.

Among the six indicators of the ranking is the number of Highly Cited Researchers, for which the University of Freiburg ranks fourth within Germany.

Subject-related results

The University of Freiburg is ranked 40th worldwide and fifth in Germany in the subject of Medical Technology. It received the following rankings by subject: in Ecology (rank 4-6 nationally), Remote Sensing (rank 3-4 nationally) and Human Biological Sciences (rank 6-8 nationally) while receiving an overall international ranking of 51-75 in these subjects. In the subjects Water Resources (ranked 1-3 nationally), Biological Sciences (ranked 6-11 nationally), Agricultural Sciences (ranked 5 nationally), Dentistry & Oral Sciences (ranked 5-7 nationally), and Pharmarcy & Pharmaceutical Sciences (ranked 7-9 nationally), the University is ranked 76-100 internationally worldwide.

The Shanghai Ranking, which has been published since 2003, is one of the oldest and most prestigious research rankings in the world. Starting in 2009, it has been published annually by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organization for university information. The ranking compares universities on the basis of six indicators, including scientific publications and citations. The ranking now includes more than 2,500 universities in the comparison and publishes the results of the top 1,000 universities.
