Freiburg, Aug 07, 2020
The Förderverein Alumni Freiburg awards its Alumni Prize for social commitment every year. The prize comes with 2,000 euros prize money. It was welcome recognition for the student initiative Nachhaltigkeitsbüro “Sustainability Office” when the Förderverein Alumni Freiburg selected the group for last year’s Alumni Prize for social commitment. The initiative pools student lobbying for more sustainability at the university and is committed, among other things, to the launch of a Studium Oecologicum. “The Alumni Prize for social commitment is awarded to students or student groups who have shown outstanding voluntary commitment to social causes in society or who have taken innovative measures to improve living, studying and working conditions at the University of Freiburg,” explains Rudolf-Werner Dreier, manager of the alumni association. “This year we are once again hoping for exciting nominations and would like to encourage all students and employees of the University to submit their proposals to us - you can also nominate yourself.”
2,000 euros prize money
The Alumni Prize for social commitment is endowed with 2,000 euros. In addition to the Sustainability Office, in recent years the award has gone to the student telephone hotline, Nightline; the association Rock your Life! Freiburg e.V., which accompanies vocational school students from socially or economically disadvantaged backgrounds on their path to a job or further schooling; and to the Schlüsselmensch initiative, which supports refugees. Individual students have also received the award - for example, Shahrzad Mohammadi for her Bike Bridge project, in which refugee girls and women learn to ride bicycles and find ways out of social isolation; Raphael Siepe for his work in the association Kinderherzen retten e.V., and Dunja Khoury for her work to help the victims of the war in Syria.
The prize goes to students who are enrolled at the University of Freiburg at the time of the call for nominations, or to student initiatives who are actively working at the University of Freiburg at the time of the call for nominations. Nominations may be submitted to Rudolf-Werner Dreier and the faculty alumni representatives. The decision on who will receive the 2020 Alumni Prize for Social Commitment 2020 will be made by the board of the Förderverein Alumni Freiburg.
