University of Freiburg Successful in Quality Pact for Instruction

Approval of Six Million Euro Proposal for Further Development of Instruction and Course Offerings

Freiburg, May 17, 2011

The University of Freiburg has overcome the decisive hurdle in the selection process for the Quality Pact for Instruction: The Joint Science Conference (GWK) of the federal and state governments announced on 17 May 2011 that Freiburg’s 6.2 million euro proposal has been selected for funding. “This is a good day for the students and teachers of the University of Freiburg. The funds from the Quality Pact for Instruction will allow us to initiate a targeted further development of our course offerings,” said Rector Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer.

The concept submitted by the University of Freiburg is based on the strategy “Windows for Higher Education,” which was already successful in the “Excellent Teaching” competition. “In especially popular degree programs we will be able to fill positions earlier and hire additional adjunct faculty,” said Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Heiner Schanz, who was responsible for drafting the proposal. “The establishment of the new interdisciplinary teaching center ‘University College Freiburg’ strengthens the University of Freiburg’s distinctive profile.” The proposal includes means of evaluation and projects for instructional development to improve the methodology and content of course offerings. It encompasses a total of 6.2 million euros in funding for a period of five years.

The German federal and state governments launched the Quality Pact for Instruction as a means of providing higher education institutions around two billion euros in additional funding in the next decade to improve the conditions of studies and the quality of instruction. The funds must be applied for in a competitive procedure. The organizers are aiming for a fair distribution of funding between institutions in various states. A total of 204 proposals were submitted in the first selection round.
